How-to Make Care Kits to Help the Homeless
A care kit contains essential relief items for adults experiencing homelessness. Things like clean socks, a rain poncho, a hand warmer or gloves, bath wipes, and snacks offer comfort to someone living outdoors in difficult conditions. When you make care kits (aka blessing bag), you are showing kindness and compassion for a fellow human being going through difficult times and enduring cruel living conditions.
Blanchet House volunteers and staff offer the care kits that you make to our meal guests daily. They are so appreciated! Thank you for helping us alleviate suffering.
Where to Purchase Care Kit Items
- Most items are available in bulk from our Amazon wish list or grocery stores.
- You could also hold a drive with your friends and community.
Drop Off Care Kits
Care kits can be dropped off Mon-Sat at 310 NW Glisan St., between 8-10:30 am or 1:30-4 pm. These times avoid our meal services, which are too busy to properly receive donations.
Basic Hygiene Care Kits
People who find their way to Blanchet House’s doors are in most need of the following items. Please do not include literature, medications like Tylenol or Advil, or liquid hand sanitizer.
Fill a zippered gallon-size plastic bag containing travel or trial-sized of some or all of the following:

- Wet wipes or bath wipes
- Cotton swabs

- Nail clippers
- Pair of Socks

Summer Care Kits
The hot, dry days of summer in a mostly concrete environment greatly increases a human’s need for water. Regular access to clean drinking water is very difficult for people experiencing homelessness in Portland. Our summer care kit addresses the basic needs of survival for someone living outdoors during hot, sunny weather.
One gallon-sized zippered plastic bag containing the following:
(No paper bags. Paper falls apart easily but zippered plastic bags can be reused.)
- 1 Reusable Plastic Bottle or Bottle of Water
- Blanchet House will and refill empty water bottles during the summer.
- 1-2 Hygiene Products
- Lip balm
- Wet wipes
- 1-2 Wrapped Store-Bought Snacks
- It’s nice to have something sweet to eat on hot days.
